Presentation of Podstrana

Podstrana is located about 10 km south of Split, along the coast. It has 7,300 inhabitants, all in one same urbanized area covering the territory of the entire municipality. By the 2001 census, the average age of the inhabitants is 33,5 years, making this municipality the second youngest in Croatia. Until 1980, Podstrana was considered as a suburban part of the Town of Split.

Flag of Podstrana

The symbols of Podstrana are decribed in the Municipality Status Statut Općine Podstrana, adopted on 16 September 2009 by the Municipality Council and published on 18 September 2009 in the Municipality official gazette Slubeni glasnik Općine Podstrana, No. 6 (text).

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, and approved by the Central State Office for Administration before 2006.

The flag (photo) is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
The ceremonial flag, mentioned but not described in the Statutes, is a dark red gonfanon with unknown details.

The coat of arms is "Azure a fleur-de-lis argent gorged with a crown or".
The crown is of the early Croatian style and, presumably, represent Duke Mislav (around 835-845). In 839 Mislav signed a peace treaty with Venice in Podstrana, after an unsucessful attack by the Venetians of the Eastern Adriatic coast.
